Core skills: Image

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

DVA Student Drawing, MSVA
I chose this image/work partly because of my love of cats, but also because I love to draw in a similar style to this, so this appeals to me in that way. This work looks like it was taken out of a visual diary, and also looks as though something has been spilt on it, but I think that it adds to the drawing. It looks like it has been made by drawing with pencil with possibly some pen too. I'm not sure what this image is about, there could be a deeper meaning behind it but to me it is just a lovely picture of three cats chilling out.

This image confused me a little with the blurry background, but I also really like it. I like the style the drawings have been drawn in, I also like the way colour is used to add eye-catching areas in the image too. The use of tracing paper/baking paper is also very intriguing, it adds a layer of transparency and makes the almost harsh colours of the background appear softer and it blends and blurs the shapes too. I chose this image because of the way it was made, and the way you really have to look to find little details within the drawing that you wouldn't see at a first glance.

I really like this artist, I like the idea of creating characters or moments that don't have beginnings or ends and you have tote imagine what happens next or who they are. I like the idea of creating fantasy things, things that can't happen in the real world, things that only happen within your own imagination. These drawings are done in pen, maybe pencil, and they remind me of the drawings you find as illustrations in old books or cards. I think that the way contrast is used in the drawings is also well done in that i doesn't overpower the drawing or abstract it from what it really is.
